Meet Shehzad Lokhandwalla: A UC Davis graduate with a degree in Computer Science and a passion for technology, agriculture, and international development. Currently working as a technology lead for a startup in West Africa, Shehzad reflects on how his CRCC Asia experience in Shanghai in 2012 shaped his career path and personal growth.
Introduction and Background My name is Shehzad Lokhandwalla, and I graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Computer Science. Today, I lead technology initiatives for a startup in West Africa. Beyond my technical background, I have a deep interest in agriculture and international development, which guides much of my professional focus.
Motivation for Joining CRCC Asia and Selecting Shanghai Back in 2012, China was at the forefront of global innovation, and everyone around me encouraged me to explore the country. My professor, who was Chinese, often spoke highly about the dynamic startup ecosystem in Shanghai. That really motivated me to choose Shanghai as my host location, and I wanted to see firsthand what the buzz was about.
Internship Experience During my internship, I primarily focused on reviewing code and identifying flaws, which was a technical role. While I wish I had been given more responsibilities, I found the extracurricular activities outside work to be just as, if not more, impactful. These experiences gave me a broader perspective on working in a global context.
Challenges and Overcoming Them One of the most significant challenges was the language barrier. It was difficult to navigate the city or connect with locals on my own. To overcome this, I made a conscious effort to travel with friends and groups, which made the experience more comfortable and enjoyable.
Long-Term Career Impact This internship opened up a world of possibilities for me. It inspired my decision to pursue a career that allows me to travel extensively. It also broadened my understanding of how global cultures and industries operate. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing—it was a pivotal moment in my career journey.
Living in Shanghai The accommodation was incredible—more like a hotel than what I expected for an intern. Living in Shanghai was an unforgettable experience. From the food to the people and even the challenge of learning a bit of the language, every aspect contributed to my personal and professional growth.
Memorable Experiences Outside Work Some of my favorite experiences included the scavenger hunts, trips, and networking events organized by CRCC Asia. These activities helped me form meaningful connections and immerse myself in the culture.
Lasting Connections Yes, I formed lasting connections during my time in Shanghai, including deep connections with fellow interns from my cohort. These connections made the experience even more special and impactful.
Advice for Future Interns My biggest piece of advice is to dedicate at least 3-4 hours a week to networking and attend all work-related events. In China and many Asian cultures, personal connections matter significantly more than cold emails or digital outreach.
Final Reflections Joining CRCC Asia was one of the best decisions I’ve made. While the program was a bit pricey, I have no regrets. It was a transformative experience that I’d gladly repeat. If you’re considering joining, do it—you’ll walk away with incredible memories and insights that will shape your future.
Shehzad’s story is a testament to the transformative power of stepping outside your comfort zone and immersing yourself in a different culture. His experience in Shanghai continues to influence his career and personal aspirations, making him a proud CRCC Asia alumnus.
