Amber Seymour, a Graphic Design major from Michigan State University, shares her incredible summer internship experience in Japan with CRCC Asia. From mastering design tasks to navigating cultural nuances, Amber reflects on how her time abroad transformed her personally and professionally.
Introduction and Background Hi, my name is Amber Seymour. I’m a Graphic Design major from Lansing, Michigan, and a student at Michigan State University. I joined CRCC Asia during the summer of 2024 to embark on my first international internship experience.
Motivation for Joining CRCC Asia and Choosing Japan I discovered CRCC Asia while browsing MSU’s travel portal for study abroad programs. As a second-year student, I was thrilled to learn I could combine travel with professional growth. I chose Japan because it has been a dream destination of mine since childhood.
Internship Experience My role involved working on the website of my host company, designing visuals, and translating their main website into English. I developed skills in marketing management, effective workplace communication, and creating organized documentation for future employees. The most rewarding moments came when I got a design just right—it was so satisfying!
Challenges and Overcoming Them Adapting to daily life in Japan was a unique challenge. Learning to navigate the train system, figuring out where to shop, and adjusting to the differences in grocery options—like the scarcity of frozen dinners—were all part of the experience. These seemingly small things taught me to adapt and embrace the differences.
Long-Term Career Impact My time in Japan solidified my goal of pursuing a master’s degree and eventually living there long-term. It also gave me valuable insights into how I can create a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle while working in a foreign country.
Living in Japan Living on my own for the first time, away from my mother, was a transformative experience. Immersing myself in Japanese culture gave me newfound confidence and independence. I even came to appreciate the calm and quietness of having my own space—it was lovely.
Memorable Experiences Outside Work Exploring Tokyo was a highlight of my experience. I loved visiting Ueno Park and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, where I enjoyed picnics with friends and solo adventures. I also discovered adorable trinkets and amazing traditional foods, which made my journey even more special.
Lasting Connections I made meaningful connections during my internship. I’m still in touch with another intern and occasionally chat with my company’s manager on Instagram. These relationships are a testament to the bond formed through shared experiences.
Advice for Future Interns Go for it! This experience will leave you with a lifetime of memories and may even inspire personal growth. My biggest takeaway is that there are opportunities like scholarships to make this possible—don’t let doubt hold you back. And trust me, take every opportunity to explore your host country—you’ll regret the ones you miss!
Final Reflections Joining CRCC Asia was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My advice? Do the thing! Visit that club, explore that national landmark, and dive into every experience. I missed visiting a temple, and I still kick myself for it—don’t make the same mistake!
Amber’s story highlights the transformative power of stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new opportunities. Her time in Japan not only advanced her career goals but also shaped her into a more confident and independent individual.
